GROUNDWATER INVESTIGATION IN DRINI RIVER BASIN

Component 6

This sixth Component of the KEP is coordinated and implemented by the Regional River Basin Authority (RRBA) within the MESP with the following expected outputs and related activities:

1.Construction of 25 wells, performing of pumping tests and analysis of results.
The related tasks are:

Assistance in drafting Terms of Reference and tender dossier for the geophysical investigation programme.
Definition of water body/ies within Drini River basin where to conduct geophysical investigation (decision by MESP/ WD/KHMI)
Coordination with MESP and respective Municipalities for solving the access rights for conducting the geophysical investigation
Assist the Procurement of geophysical investigation services.
Supervision and control of the geophysical investigation programme.
Analysis of the results of the geophysical investigations.
Preparation of a report on proposed sites where the wells are to be constructed.
Assistance in drafting Terms of Reference and tender dossier for the well drilling and pumping test programme.
Definition of location for drilling of the (monitoring & testing) wells, including the geodetical survey to locate the wells and the site visits
Coordination with MESP and respective Municipalities for solving the access rights for drilling of the wells
Management of the Procurement of well drilling and pumping test services, preparation of the tender dossier.
Planning, supervision and control of the well drilling and pumping test programme.
Carrying out the hydraulic and hydro-geological analysis of well drilling and pumping test data to establish well and aquifer characteristics.
Supervision and control of well completion, including the final well completion report and commissioning

2. Characterisation of quantitative status of Groundwater Bodies (GWB)

and analysis of aquifer capacities and groundwater potential of Drini River Basin.

The related tasks are:

Updating the existing programme for monitoring of groundwater quality.
Identification of the transboundary GWB in the Drin RB by making use of the results of the “Drin RB Characteristics-Hydrology Report”.
Identification of the flow system of the GWB in the Drin River Basin (recharge and discharge)
Implementation of a synthesis assessment of aquifer capacities and groundwater potential in the studied areas
Advice on use of groundwater quality data as reference for development and protection purposes.
3. Characterisation of qualitative status of Groundwater Bodies in the Drini River Basin.

The related tasks are:

Assistance in drafting Terms of Reference for conducting the water quality tests, bill of quantities for sample collection and testing
Assistance in the preparation of the tender dossier (drafting and setting the selection criteria for tenderers) and procurement process
Performing quality tests for standard quality parameters (chemical, physical and bacteriological) and analysing the groundwater status
Methodologies and approaches on quality status and trend status
4. Strengthening of the capacities of WD/KEPA/KHMI and improvement of sampling, monitoring and mechanism.

The related tasks are:

Conduction of on-the-job training to strengthen capacities of MESP personnel on geophysical methods for groundwater exploration, identification of well locations, well construction, well development, well & aquifer testing, calculation of aquifer extraction potential and aquifer recharge.
Conduction of on-the-job training for monitoring groundwater bodies: No. of monitoring stations and density per GWB, etc.
Review and proposing changes to existing MESP and reporting set-up.
